Production Started of BMW Hydrogen 7-series (14/11/06)

BMW have announced that 100 Hydrogen 7s will be built in 2007.  The Hydrogen 7 will boast a 6.0 litre 12-cylinder engine as found in the current 760iL that can also run on hydrogen.

Range is limited to 125 miles running on Hydrogen however combined with its petrol tank, total range is increase to 425miles.  Hydrogen cars are still in their infancy, duel-fuel vehicles are a must as there is a limited availability of liquefied hydrogen filling stations.

The Hydrogen 7 will accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.5sec, and hit a maximum speed of 143mph with the only emission being water while running on hydrogen alone.  Hydrogen engines generally produces less power than its petrol or diesel counterpart but BMW claim that their V12 engine can produce 260bhp in either petrol or hydrogen mode making it the world’s first super-low-emissions luxury vehicle.

The Hydrogen 7 will make its public debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show on November 28 however the first 100 cars will be leased to selected corporate drivers in order to help research the new hydrogen fuel technology.
